The City of Somerville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Director of Inspectional Services within the Department of Inspectional Services. Salary Range: Starting at $130,000 (commensurate with experience)

About the Role

Reporting directly to the Mayor, the Director of Inspectional Services is responsible for the management and oversight of all inspectional services operations, including building, health, zoning, plumbing/gas, electrical, and weights and measures divisions.

This position plays a vital role in shaping Somerville’s built environment and safeguarding public health. The Director will guide policy development, manage departmental budgets, and engage with residents, developers, and city leadership to ensure compliance with laws, codes, and regulations while advancing Somerville’s strategic growth and development goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a multidisciplinary department overseeing building, health, and weights & measures divisions.

  • Enforce all laws, codes, and regulations related to building construction, zoning, and public health.

  • Administer and manage the department’s budget and operational planning.

  • Serve as a key advisor to the Mayor on inspectional services and public safety matters.

  • Collaborate with other departments to proactively address problem properties and code enforcement challenges.

  • Represent the City before elected officials, regulatory agencies, developers, and the public.

  • Oversee the use of CitizenServe, the City’s licensing and permitting software, and streamline processes for efficiency.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Public Administration, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant municipal or code enforcement experience, including significant supervisory responsibility.

  • Construction Supervisor’s License required.

  • Certified Building Official (CBO) required.

  • Strong knowledge of building codes, zoning regulations, and public health standards.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage budgets, analyze complex issues, and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Additional Information

  • Salary: Starting at $130,000, dependent on qualifications and experience.

  • Hours: Full-time, Monday through Friday; additional hours as needed for public meetings or department needs.

  • Direct Report: Mayor, City of Somerville.

  • Location: Inspectional Services Department, Somerville, MA.

  • Start Date: As soon as possible.
