The City of Somerville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Director of Water and Sewer within the Department of Water and Sewer. This senior leadership role provides an exciting opportunity to guide infrastructure modernization, protect public health, and ensure the reliable delivery of water and wastewater services for more than 80,000 residents.

About the Role
Reporting directly to the Mayor, the Director of Water and Sewer is responsible for the administration, planning, and management of the City’s water distribution, sewer, and drainage systems. The Director oversees all operations, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations while supporting the City’s goals of sustainability, resiliency, and operational excellence.
The Director will lead a skilled team focused on quality assurance, infrastructure investment, and customer service. This position plays a critical role in advancing Somerville’s long-term infrastructure planning and environmental stewardship.
Key Responsibilities
- 
Ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient delivery of potable water and wastewater services.
 - 
Serve as the City’s primary liaison to MWRA, DEP, EPA, and other regulatory agencies.
 - 
Manage the construction, operation, metering, and billing of approximately 15,000 customer accounts.
 - 
Oversee lead sampling and service replacement programs in accordance with DEP and MWRA requirements.
 - 
Develop and manage the department’s annual budget and establish revenue rates.
 - 
Lead and mentor staff, set strategic goals, and promote safety, training, and excellent customer service.
 - 
Identify and secure grants and funding opportunities to enhance infrastructure investment.
 
Qualifications and Requirements
- 
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, Business Administration, or a related field.
 - 
Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in water and sewer system maintenance and operations, with at least four years in a management role.
 - 
Massachusetts Drinking Water License Grade 3 “In Full” required (Grade 4 preferred).
 - 
Wastewater Collections Certificate Grade 4 preferred.
 - 
Proven ability to manage budgets, lead staff, ensure regulatory compliance, and deliver exceptional public service.

Salary: Starting at $130,000, dependent on qualifications and experience.

Hours: Full-time, Monday through Friday; additional hours as needed for emergencies or public meetings.
 -
