Every first Friday in February, people across the country wear red in honor of National Wear Red Day, a movement to raise awareness about women’s heart health. But for me, this day is personal. It’s not just a cause; it’s my reality.

At 40, I Had Open Heart Surgery

Most people don’t expect a heart condition to strike when they’re otherwise healthy and only 40 years old. I sure didn’t. But that’s exactly when my life took a turn I never saw coming.

For months, I had symptoms that I brushed off, fatigue, occasional shortness of breath, and this general feeling that something just wasn’t right. I chalked it up to stress, work, aging. You name it. I didn’t think it was serious.

But my heart had other plans.

Thankfully, my incredible medical team didn’t ignore what I had. After some tests and a thorough evaluation, they found the real culprit: my mitral valve wasn’t working properly, and I needed open heart surgery to repair it.

It’s surreal to even type those words. At 40, I was facing major surgery that saved my life.

Ignoring the Signs Could’ve Cost Me More

The truth is, I was lucky. Lucky that I had a team that listened. Lucky that they caught it before irreversible damage was done. And lucky to be here today, sharing this story.

But many women aren’t that lucky.

Heart disease is the #1 killer of women in the U.S. It doesn’t always come with chest-clutching pain or dramatic TV symptoms. Sometimes, it’s fatigue. A little shortness of breath. Dizziness. Things we write off or power through.

We’re taught to push through discomfort. We’re not taught to prioritize ourselves, especially not our health.

Wear Red for Me — and for You

That’s why National Wear Red Day matters. It’s not just symbolic. It’s powerful. It’s a reminder to listen to your body, to know your numbers, and to advocate for your health. It’s a day that could save a life, maybe even yours.

So this year, when you put on that red blouse, dress, hat, or even just red socks, I hope you think of women like me. And I hope you think of yourself, too.

Make that doctor’s appointment. Ask questions. Don’t ignore your body. You only get one heart, take care of it.

I’m Here Because I Did — and So Can You.
