The Town of Westford is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Public Safety Telecommunicator within the Public Safety Communications Department. This civilian position plays a critical role in ensuring effective emergency response for police, fire, and medical services.

About the Role
Under the direct supervision of the Operations Administrator, the Public Safety Telecommunicator is responsible for receiving and dispatching emergency and routine communications. Duties include answering 911 calls, providing Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD), dispatching fire, police, and medical units, and utilizing CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) systems to log and manage incidents.
The position is covered under the contract agreement between the Town of Westford and the Communication Workers of America, Local 1051. Candidates must successfully pass a background investigation, pre-employment screenings, and meet certification requirements.
- Receive and prioritize emergency and non-emergency calls for service, maintaining professionalism and calm communication at all times.
- Dispatch police, fire, EMS, and other emergency resources using radio and CAD systems.
- Provide EMD protocols to callers in medical emergencies.
- Maintain accurate records in CAD, including times, incident details, and communications.
- Monitor and operate multiple communication systems, including radios, alarms, AVL, and surveillance.
- Relay vital information to emergency personnel and supervisors during incidents.
- Assist with department notifications, scheduling, and documentation as directed.
- Maintain knowledge of local geography, mutual aid agreements, and public safety procedures.
- Ensure daily testing of communication equipment and report malfunctions.
- Support the public with non-emergency inquiries, permits, and scheduling as appropriate.
Qualifications and Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalency required; college coursework preferred.
- Strong knowledge of public safety communications terminology.
- Ability to multitask under pressure in high-stress situations.
- Proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Office; CAD/dispatch systems experience preferred.
- Excellent communication, typing accuracy, and interpersonal skills.
- Must maintain certifications including:
- E 9-1-1 Operator Certification
- CJIS Operator Certification
- Basic Emergency Telecommunications
- Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD)
- CPR Certification

- Salary: $24.86 – $32.48 per hour, dependent on qualifications and experience.
- Hours: Full-time; schedule includes nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Direct Report: Operations Administrator.
