Is your community dedicated to safeguarding its drinking water sources? If so, the Maine Source Protection Grant might be the perfect opportunity for you. Available to community and non-profit public water systems, this grant aims to fund projects that protect both groundwater and surface water.

Eligible applicants can secure funding of up to $10,000, or $20,000 in limited cases depending on the scope of the project.  Funds will support initiatives that demonstrate a commitment to ongoing source water protection. This funding can aid a variety of projects – from updating watershed management plans and establishing protective ordinances to creating public outreach programs aimed at educating residents about drinking water safety.

Examples of surface water protection projects include the development of lake monitoring programs and installing deterrents like buoys and signs near water intake sites. For groundwater protection, projects could focus on updating Wellhead Protection Plans or identifying and removing potential contamination sources.

It’s important to note that only those water systems in compliance with Drinking Water Rules & Regulations are eligible for funding unless the grant will help bring a system back into compliance.

The Maine CDC Drinking Water Program is accepting applications on a rolling basis and now is the ideal time to consider how you can make a difference in your community’s water safety. By taking advantage of this grant, you not only help protect vital water sources but also contribute to the health and well-being of your community.
