The Town of Westford, Massachusetts, is seeking a skilled and forward-thinking finance director to lead its financial operations and help shape the town’s future. 

This full-time department head position offers a competitive salary range of $130,509 to $158,000, depending on experience and qualifications. As finance director, you’ll play a key role in managing the town’s financial health and advancing long-term priorities in budgeting, capital planning and compliance. 

Reporting directly to the town manager, the finance director will oversee the town’s core financial functions — including accounting, revenue collection, debt management and financial reporting — and supervise key team members such as the town accountant, chief assessor and treasurer/collector. 

What you’ll do 

As Westford’s finance director, you’ll be at the heart of strategic decision-making. Key responsibilities include: 

  • Leading the town’s annual budget and five-year financial planning processes 
  • Overseeing capital improvement planning to align resources with long-term goals 
  • Preparing and presenting financial reports to town boards, committees and stakeholders 
  • Managing internal controls and ensuring compliance with Massachusetts General Laws 
  • Representing the town in discussions with external stakeholders, including bond rating agencies 

What Westford’s looking for… 

The ideal candidate brings strong leadership, a deep understanding of municipal finance and a collaborative approach. A master’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration or a related field is preferred, along with six to eight years of experience in municipal finance or government, including at least three years in a leadership role. 

Candidates should demonstrate: 

  • A working knowledge of financial systems and municipal finance best practices 
  • The ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to diverse audiences 
  • A strategic mindset, with a passion for public service and continuous improvement 

Equivalent combinations of education and experience will also be considered.
