The United States is gradually transitioning to low-carbon vehicles as part of our commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change. We have all noticed an increasing number of compact cars and trucks designed to be more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly. These vehicles often use advanced technology, such as hybrid and electric powertrains, to minimize their carbon footprint.

According to research from the U.S. EPA, the typical 22 MPG gas-based car emits about 4.6 tons of carbon dioxide per year. On average, you emit one ton of CO2 for about every 2,500 miles you drive.

What does a ton of CO2 look like?

Imagine a cube 27 feet tall, wide, and long. That’s almost as tall, wide, and long as a telephone pole and that’s how much space it would take to hold a metric ton of CO2.  A metric ton is 2,204.6 pounds and is a little bigger than the American ton’s 2,000 pounds.

Although the pace of the transition to low-carbon vehicles is not as swift at the state and local government levels, there are numerous funding mechanisms available.

Various grants, tax credits, and loan and rebate programs are offered to local governments through the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, the Environmental Protection Agency, and state governments. These programs support the acquisition of low-carbon fleets, the development of charging infrastructure, and the implementation of strategies aimed at reducing fossil fuel emissions to enhance energy efficiency.
