The Shared Streets and Spaces Program, administered by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), is currently accepting grant applications for fiscal year 2025 through Jan. 13, 2025.
The Shared Streets and Spaces Program is designed to enhance public health, improve safe transportation options and boost local commerce in Massachusetts communities.
The program is open to all municipalities and public transit authorities in the Commonwealth. Funding is provided to quickly implement improvements to public spaces, including plazas, sidewalks, curbs, streets, bus stops, parking areas and more.
Eligible Projects
Bikeshare Equipment:
- Purchase bikes, docks, locks, kiosks and install minor infrastructure like bike racks or pads.
- Cover operational costs (software, insurance, maintenance) for up to three years or grant cap.
Bicycle & Pedestrian Infrastructure:
- Build or improve sidewalks, crosswalks, pedestrian signals, bike lanes, trails or rail crossings.
- Add bike racks, repair stations, lighting, wayfinding signs and snow removal tools.
- Ensure infrastructure meets safety and accessibility standards.
Transit Supportive Infrastructure:
- Create bus lanes, improve bus stop access (shelters, lighting, signage) and add traffic signal priority systems.
Reimagining Public Spaces:
- Transform streets, curbs, or parking areas for walking, biking, dining or community use.
- Include ADA-compliant elements and support equipment like heaters or seating for outdoor activities.
Key Requirements
- Projects must promote public health, safe transportation or local commerce.
- Community support and quick, low-cost implementation are prioritized.
- Designs must meet safety and accessibility standards.
- The project’s cost estimates must follow MassDOT’s standard allowances.
Applicants must demonstrate that proposed projects can be implemented by December 31, 2027, to be considered eligible.
