The Town of Medfield launched the Downtown Façade Improvement and Beautification Grant Program to support local businesses and property owners in making meaningful exterior improvements throughout the downtown area.
Funded through the Commonwealth’s 2022 Economic Development Bond Bill, the program provided $120,000 in reimbursement-based grants for eligible projects such as façade renovations, signage, lighting, landscaping, and other permanent improvements visible from public areas. With awards ranging from $2,500 to $20,000, the program was designed to enhance the appearance and accessibility of downtown, support local businesses, strengthen economic activity, and help prepare the community for Medfield’s 375th anniversary celebrations.
Supporting the Program from Planning Through Implementation
Medfield collaborated with CSS Senior Project Manager, Heather Lemieux to help develop, launch, administer, and guide the program from its earliest planning stages through project implementation.
Heather’s Role
Heather was closely involved throughout the entire process, making this a unique, long-term project that included multiple stages of planning, administration, outreach, application review, and implementation.
Heather worked closely with the Assistant Town Administrator, Director of Land Use and Planning, Town administration, town boards, local businesses, and property owners throughout the process.
One of the first steps was developing program guidelines that reflected both the Town’s goals and the needs of the downtown business community.
Heather helped develop clear eligibility requirements, application materials, program deadlines, and a consistent review process so applicants understood what was expected.
The application and other program materials were reviewed and approved by the appropriate Town boards, helping ensure everyone involved understood the process.
Heather also created a project checklist to track requirements and progress, as well as an evaluation form to help assess applications and present recommendations for which projects should fund.
Community outreach and impact:
Outreach was one of the challenges of the program, making it important to use several communication methods to reach downtown businesses and property owners.
The Town and project team used social media, direct outreach to businesses, Town communication channels, and other media platforms to spread the word about the opportunity.
Clear communication was especially important to make sure potential applicants understood the program, application process, requirements, and deadlines.
One of the most rewarding parts of the program has been seeing the visible difference the improvements are making in downtown Medfield.
The projects demonstrate how targeted funding can support individual businesses and property owners while also improving the overall downtown environment and contributing to a more welcoming, accessible and vibrant community.
The improvements are expected to be completed ahead of Medfield’s 375th anniversary parade, allowing the community to showcase its downtown during an important milestone.
The project balances historic preservation, beautification, and economic development, helping enhance downtown while maintaining the character that makes Medfield unique.
