For many of us, the outdoors is a source of health, peace, and empowerment. Yet across New Mexico, too many young people—especially those in rural, Indigenous, and historically underserved communities—face substantial barriers to experiencing the natural world around them. These barriers deny them access not only to the state’s majestic landscapes but also to the life-changing benefits that come with time spent outside.

The Outdoor Equity Fund (OEF) is changing that.

A Vision for Outdoor Access and Equity

Established in 2019, the Outdoor Equity Fund is the first program of its kind in the United States. It was built on the simple yet powerful idea that access to the outdoors is a basic human right. Administered by the New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Division, the fund supports programs that connect youth with the physical, mental, and social benefits of nature.

But OEF goes further—it’s not just about going outside. It’s about creating transformative outdoor experiences that build stewardship, nurture respect for cultural heritage, and open doors to future careers in outdoor recreation and conservation.

Real Impact, Real Results

Since launching its first round of grants in 2020, the Outdoor Equity Fund has awarded $6.5 million in support of youth-focused outdoor programming across the state. The impact has been profound: more than 83,000 young New Mexicans have participated in programs that promote health, well-being, environmental awareness, and a lifelong bond with the outdoors.

These funded experiences range from backpacking and kayaking adventures to culturally informed land stewardship projects and career training in conservation science—each one designed to inspire and empower the next generation of outdoor leaders.

What’s Next: Funding Opportunities for FY26

Looking ahead to Fiscal Year 2026, the Outdoor Recreation Division is making $3 million available through the Outdoor Equity Fund. The application process is split into two rounds:

  • Round 1 Applications: Open June 1, 2025 – July 31, 2025
  • Round 2 Applications: Open January 1, 2026 – January 31, 2026

These grants offer a unique opportunity for organizations, educators, and community leaders to make a lasting impact on youth and their relationship with the outdoors.

A complete list of funded projects can be explored via the Grant Recipient Database and Grant Distribution Map. This is a valuable resource for understanding how these investments are shaping communities and the environment across the state
