Diesel engines built a lot of New Hampshire’s infrastructure—but older models also churn out a disproportionate share of soot, smog-forming gases, and climate-warming carbon. To speed the transition to cleaner technology, the N.H. Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) is putting the final round of its 2024-25 Clean Diesel Grant Program on the table—backed by the U.S. EPA’s Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA).
Below is everything you need to know to decide whether Round 2 funding is right for your fleet or job site, plus a quick primer on how to submit a winning proposal before 4 p.m. ET on May 30, 2025.
What the Clean Diesel Program Is (and Why It Matters)
- Mission: Cut toxic and climate-forcing diesel pollution, protect public health, and modernize the equipment that keeps New Hampshire running.
- Funding source: Federal DERA dollars funneled through NHDES’s Technical Services Bureau.
- How it works: Competitive, reimbursement-style grants that cover a slice of your project costs once the clean technology is installed and the dirty engine is permanently scrapped.
Eligible Projects in Round 2 (2024-25)
Round 1 is closed, and Round 2 focuses exclusively on non-road diesel equipment—think the heavy lifters of construction, agriculture, cargo handling, mining, and energy production (generators, pumps, etc.).
Project Type
- Non-road vehicle, engine, or equipment replacement
Example Upgrades
- Replace a Tier 0-II excavator with an electric or Tier 4 unit
- Swap out a diesel generator for an ultra-low-NOx natural-gas model
Maximum Reimbursement
- Up to 45 % if switching to zero-emission or all-electric (includes charging infrastructure)
- Up to 25 % if upgrading to a newer, cleaner diesel
*Percentages follow EPA DERA guidelines; see the amendment for full details.
