Nicole Iannuzzi’s Path to Engineering Excellence 

Engineering careers rarely follow a perfectly straight line, and Nicole Iannuzzi’s journey is a powerful example of how curiosity, persistence, and the right opportunity can shape a lasting and meaningful career. 

A Spark in the Classroom 

Nicole’s path into engineering began in a small high school Physics II class, just five students. Once lessons wrapped up, her teacher would open discussions about science-based careers. One day, civil engineering became the topic. 

What stood out wasn’t just the technical aspect, but the versatility. Civil engineering offered multiple paths, structural, geotechnical, transportation, environmental, and the chance to influence everyday life in meaningful ways. For Nicole, it felt like a way to contribute to society from behind the scenes, shaping infrastructure that people rely on daily. 

Finding the Right Fit 

Like many professionals, Nicole’s early career came with uncertainty. After earning her bachelor’s degree and beginning her master’s, she stepped into her first engineering role, only to feel it wasn’t what she had envisioned. Doubt crept in, and she began exploring entirely different paths, from physical therapy to even applying to the FBI. 

Then came a pivotal moment: an opportunity at BETA. 

Initially intended as a temporary stop, that decision quickly became transformational. Within just two weeks, Nicole realized she had found the environment she had been searching for; one that fostered learning, growth, and advancement. She committed fully, withdrew from other pursuits, and never looked back. Today, she celebrates 30 years with the firm, a testament to the power of finding the right professional home. 

Leading by Example 

Nicole’s leadership philosophy is grounded in action. Rather than directing from a distance, she works alongside her team, mentoring, guiding, and supporting them through every stage of a project. 

Her approach is collaborative and hands-on. Whether helping navigate complex challenges or stepping in during high-pressure deadlines, she ensures her team knows she’s there, not just as a leader, but as a partner in the work. 

Engineering Impact: The Tanyard Brook Project 

Among Nicole’s many accomplishments, the Tanyard Brook Culvert Replacement Project stands out as a defining achievement. 

This complex initiative addressed long-standing flooding issues affecting residential neighborhoods. The project required replacing aging infrastructure, improving stormwater capacity, and minimizing disruption to dozens of homes along the brook’s path. 

The challenges were significant: deteriorating stone walls, undersized pipes, tidal impacts, and a system running directly through private properties. Through a carefully phased approach and close collaboration with the town, contractors, and residents, the team delivered a solution that now effectively conveys stormwater and reduces flooding risks. 

Beyond the engineering itself, the project exemplified community-focused design balancing technical performance with real human impact. 

Continuing to Grow 

Even after decades in the field, Nicole remains energized by new challenges. Her recent work on airport projects with RIAC has introduced her to entirely new environments and technical considerations, proof that learning in engineering never truly stops.

Nicole’s advice is simple but powerful: work hard, stay curious, and take initiative. Embrace every opportunity to learn, and don’t hesitate to step up when responsibilities are offered.
